The school type of the “Aufbaugymnasium”
The school type of the Aufbaugymnasium is a special form of the German Gymnasium (British equivalent: grammar school; American equivalent: high school) because it does not start with year 5, but with year 7. At the end of year 10 the pupils reach a qualification that the British call GCSE O’levels. They can either leave school and do an apprenticeship or go on to the 6th form (In America called Senior High School) to take the German Abitur (in Britain: GCSE A’levels; in the USA: High School Diploma), which entitles to do university studies.
General features of the school:
- first foreign language (compulsory): English
- second foreign language (compulsory): Latin or French (starting in year 7);
- third foreign language (optional): Spanish (starting in year 11)
- the other subject matters are: German, maths, history, politics, geography, biology, physics, chemistry, art, music, religious education, sports;
Courses in the sixth form:
advanced level courses: English, German, maths, biology, history; the students have to choose two of these at the beginning of year 12;
basic courses: German, English, French, Spanish, history, geography, maths, biology, physics, chemistry, art, music, religious education, sports; the students have to choose at least seven of these at the beginning of year 12. Subject matters they have chosen as advanced level courses must not be among the basic courses.
In year 11 the students have at least 10 of the above-mentioned subject matters at basic level.
